Abstract:
This study was an exploration of the relationship between transformational leadership (TL) and employee trust (ET). Past research has shown that TL is the preferred style of leadership supporting ET. However, no previous studies had been designed to assess the relationship between TL and ET in small business organizations (SBOs). To fill this gap in the literature, 100 employees of SBOs in Georgia completed a survey that included demographics, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), and the Mayer & Davis Trust Scale (MDTS). Data were analyzed using simple correlation and multiple regression at p < .05 for statistical significance.
Results indicated that the total MLQ was not significantly related to the total MDTS. However, total MLQ was significantly correlated with the idealized behaviors element of the MDTS, and the idealized behaviors element of the MDTS was significantly correlated with the ability and integrity elements of the MLQ (each p < .05). Combined, these findings indicate that leadership ability and integrity are related to ET, highlighting the role of TL in promoting ET in SBOs.
